I believe Section 375(4) and Section 376A(5) to be antiquated, and to fail to acknowledge the rights and equality of women. In these two sections, the law continues to treat married women as the property of men. Marital rape immunity therefore must be repealed.

Dear PM Lee,
I work in a shelter for domestic violence victims. The women who come into shelter describe the abuses they experience to me in detail and almost without exception, they describe situations in which they are forced to have sex with their husbands against their will. Many women don't call themselves victims of rape. But the tears and mental anguish they carry with them for years afterwards say otherwise. Sexual abuse in marital relationships are part of a continuum of violence that exists in almost all abusive relationships. Being forced to have sex is an act of violence steps away from being physically abused by one's husband. I urge you to repeal these Codes in order to recognize the pain and silence that women have suffered as a result of these outdated Codes. With this repeal, I believe many more Singaporean women will no longer continue to feel silenced and shamed by the extreme abuses they experience within their own homes.
